Maleschau (Czech: Malešov) is a location in Kingdom Come: Deliverance II.

Background

Maleschau is one of the main forts in the Kuttenberg region. It is the stronghold of the noble family Ruthard.

Historical context

Maleschau is a historic village dating to the 13th century, notable for its medieval fortress and a history of ownership changes and regional significance. The earliest written record of Maleschau appears in 1303, identifying Přibyslav as the owner of the fortress. In 1319, the village and estate were recorded under Zdislav of Maleschau, also known as Zdislav of Leština, who was already residing there by 1318. Zdislav had a son, Zdeněk, who is mentioned in a 1341 charter by King John of Luxembourg. Zdeněk’s descendants, Radslav, Albert, Oneš, and Jan, carried on the family name associated with the estate.

By the late 1350s, the estate passed to Purkart, Count of Maidburg, who sold it in 1359 to Sedletz Abbey. The sale came with specific restrictions, including a prohibition on the use of ponds and fishing rights by minors. Emperor Charles IV later authorized Sedletz Abbey to sell the estate in 1364, leading to its purchase by Kunclin Ruthard, a wealthy patrician from Kuttenberg, in 1365.

Ruthard adopted the title "Ruthard of Maleschau" by 1403 when he appointed a new priest for the church in Košice. After his death, the estate likely passed to Wenceslas Ruthard and his widow, Anna of Svojšice. Around 1411, Anna’s grandsons, Petr and Mikuláš, sold Maleschau, as referenced in a document dated November 24, 1411. The document reveals King Wenceslas IV’s involvement in facilitating the sale to Martin Kladný of Těchlovice, with a royal guarantee of assistance.

During the Hussite Wars, Maleschau fell under royal jurisdiction before being pledged. On June 6, 1424, the Battle of Maleschau occurred between the forces of Jan Žižka and those of Prague, likely resulting in the fortress’s capture by Žižka.

Trivia

  • The name Maleschau is rooted in a local legend about a wealthy Kuttenberg burgher named Maleš, who established a lumberjack colony in the area. The colony’s residents supplied nearby silver mines with wood and charcoal, forming the foundation of the settlement’s economy.
