Detailed walkthrough
Tobias Feyfar has been tasked with building a trebuchet for the siege of Talmberg. But despite being the best engineer in the fiefdom, he lacks experience with siege engines and cannot do this alone. Fortunately, he has heard of a siege engineer named Konrad Kyeser who has come to Sasau, likely to avoid any potential ire from Sigismund. Apparently, the two were on bad terms after the latter's defeat against the Ottomans at Nicopolis, and Konrad was de facto "banished" to find work elsewhere. Right now, he is helping with construction work at the Sasau Monastery, where he is likely being paid handsomely. Henry asks if he is to kidnap Konrad to join them, though Feyfar insists this is kept as a last resort, since it is likely Konrad can be persuaded to come along willingly.
Finding Konrad Kyeser
Head to Sasau. Asking any NPC where Konrad lives will point the player to the Custodian's house at themonastery grounds. Konrad is currently staying here on the bottom floor.
Unfortunately for Henry, the Custodian's house is not normally open to him. If another quest which grants the player access is not active, the door will be locked. Fortunately, Guard Urban will always be standing guard outside, and may be persuaded to let the player in. The player may persuade him with Speech, Maintenance skill, or telling him Henry was sent by Tobias Feyfar. When persuaded, Urban will give Henry the Custodian's house key. After entering the house, going through the door on the right will trigger a short cutscene introducing Konrad.
Konrad will be somewhat ecstatic upon hearing of the construction of a trebuchet, but sadly he is bound by contract to the monastery, and more directly to Master Builder Karel. Konrad states that it would be impossible to convince Karel to let him go, since all Karel cares about is construction work on the monastery. However, Konrad and Henry devise two possible schemes: first, they can forge the Abbot's seal and signature by obtaining Karel's commission, thus authorizing Konrad's leave. Second, if Henry can ensure Karel is short of money to pay Konrad, the latter will no longer be bound to work for him.
Bringing Konrad by force
If the player wishes to skip this quest, there is a hidden option to force Konrad to leave for Talmberg immediately. Punching Konrad once will cause him to surrender and agree to come along, though this will come with a large reputation loss with Konrad.
Forging the Abbot's seal
Karel's commission is stored in a Hard locked chest in Karel's bedroom upstairs of his desk. The player may lockpick the chest, or use the key stolen from Karel's inventory. Return to Konrad with the commission and he will suggest bringing it to the Scribe of Sasau at the Sasau Rathaus to forge the Abbot's signature and seal. He also tells Henry that he must use the password "The fox isn't half as clever as he thinks."
Regardless of what password the player gives, the Scribe has no idea what Henry is talking about, and Henry is annoyed to realize Konrad was just pranking him. In any case, he admits that Konrad Kyeser sent him to request a copied signature. The Scribe agrees to help, and will need 1 in-game hour to finish creating the Forged leave of absence.
At this point, Henry may show the forged leave of absence to Karel, but returning the original commission is required to not rouse his suspicions. Upon showing the notice to Karel, he will insist that Henry follow him back to his house where he will confirm the Abbot's signature and seal by comparing it to his commission. If the original commission was returned, Karel will agree to release Konrad. Otherwise, he will immediately call for the guards to arrest Henry, forcing the player to escape and failing this method.
Stealing Konrad's wages
There are two ways to obtain Konrad's wages. First, the player can loot 50 from Karel's inventory, directly leaving him out of money to pay Konrad. Second, the player can win the wages through beating Karel at farkle. Karel will play at the Sasau Wagoners' Inn starting at 16:00 each evening. Beating him once will leave him out of groschen to pay Konrad.
Regardless of the method used, speak to Karel after he is out of money and there will be a new option to bribe him for 2000 , ensuring Konrad's release from his contract.
Peychar the assassin
Once the player gets Karel's approval for Konrad's leave, they may return to him only to find that him terrified. Konrad is suspicious that Sigismund has sent assassins after him, as he has recently spotted an old colleague, Baron Peychar, at a local tavern. If that was not enough, a stranger has been seen creeping in the monastery garden at night, and even attempting to force open the door. Konrad is sure that Peychar is to blame, and asks Henry to investigate before he will step foot outside the house. Henry therefore promises to ask around town and hide in the garden after dark, where he can catch whoever is antagonizing Konrad.
Find out more about Peychar by asking around the Sasau Wagoners' Inn. Villagers around the Inn will say they have played dice with him, that he has very fine clothes, and that he seems to be some sort of merchant. Peychar will also be at this inn, where he can be confronted directly. When confronted, he will merely say that his trade business is private. Furthermore, Peychar insists he is not here to harm Konrad, since they are old friends.
Regardless of whether the player investigates Peychar, they may wait in or near the Custodian's house until 24:00. Around 00:30, Peychar can be found struggling to lockpick the front door. Confronting him here will have Peychar claim that the Custodian owes him for salts and spices. Regardless of Henry's response, Peychar claims he will stop sneaking around at night and find another way to sort out the matter. Of course, considering how suspiciously he was acting, the player may opt to kill him on the spot, dealing with him for good.
Talk to a relieved Konrad after dealing with Peychar, and he will agree to head to Talmberg. Returning to Feyfar at the camp will trigger a cutscene, where Konrad enthusiastically starts work on the trebuchet. Speak to Feyfar and he will reward Henry with 1075 and his trunk key, completing this quest and progressing Siege.
Strategies
- The fastest way to recruit Konrad is to skip this quest by punching him. However, the reputation loss can be significant enough he will refuse to talk to Henry without being bribed, or before completing Family Values.
- If the player does not want to kidnap Konrad, it is generally easier to forge the Abbot's seal. This does not require waiting for Karel to be ready to play dice, nor does it come with a monetary cost for the player.
Notes
- When confronted at midnight, Peychar will claim that the Custodian owes him for salts and spices. During the day however, the Innkeeper of the Sasau Wagoners' Inn will say that Peychar told him he deals in cloth.
- If the player has not completed Miracles While You Wait, the Charlatan will sneak by before Peychar for a comedic interaction.
- Peychar cannot lockpick the door to the Custodian's house on his own, and will eventually give up for the night before trying again the next.
- If the player catches Peychar at night but lets him go, they can still tell Konrad it is safe to go to Talmberg. However, Peychar will eventually reappear at the Talmberg camp where Konrad arrives. While the guards should make quick work of him, Konrad will be furious at Henry's negligence since he was nearly killed by Peychar.
- If the player steals Peychar's weapon before sending Konrad to Talmberg, he will still appear at the siege camp, though he will not attempt to kill Konrad.
- Knocking out Peychar will not complete the objective to deal with him. The player must either confront him and let him go, or kill him.
- Killing him can be done without failing the Merciful achievement by either leading Peychar to fight the guard outside Konrad's door, or believing his lies and letting the guards at the siege camp kill him.
- The door to the Custodian's house will automatically close at 24:00, though the player can open it for Peychar shortly before he arrives. In this case, Peychar will enter the house and attack the guard posted outside Konrad's door, though he is extremely likely to die due to his lack of armor.
- Even when purposefully aiding Peychar to assassinate Konrad, it is not possible to fail this quest. Getting rid of the guard and opening both doors will allow Peychar to enter Konrad's room, though he will only stand next to Konrad briefly before leaving.
