The Monastery of Sedletz (Czech: Sedlec) is a location in Kingdom Come: Deliverance II.

Background

Sedletz Monastery is the major monastery next Kuttenberg.

Historical context

Sedletz Monastery is a historic Cistercian monastery in the Kuttenberg region, founded in 1142 by the nobleman Miroslav of Cimburk, with significant support from Jindřich Zdík, the bishop of Olomouc. It is the oldest Cistercian monastery in the Czech lands. Although Cistercian monasteries typically played a role in colonizing uninhabited areas, this one was founded near the existing village of Malín.

The monastery's power grew significantly after the discovery of silver on its land. However, the immense wealth of silver proved difficult to control, leading to a gradual weakening of the Cistercians' influence over the city. Tensions between the city and the monastery became evident during the construction of the Cathedral of St. Barbara by the townspeople, which was built just outside the monastery's jurisdiction starting in the 1480s.

In December 1402, under Abbot John III, the Sedletz Monastery was largely spared from the looting by Sigismund's troops, although its properties were occupied. In 1412, a conflict between the miners of Kuttenberg and the monastery's serfs resulted in the burning of the monastery's village of Malín and the murder of its inhabitants. On April 21, 1421, Hussite soldiers burned the monastery and killed the priests. The monastery was gradually rebuilt, though it faced ongoing challenges.
