Under Christian doctrine, Baptism is the ritual shedding of Original Sin and Salvation cannot occur without it (Original Sin condemns all people since Adam to die). In the early Middle Ages, adults who consciously entered into the Christian fold were the ones baptized, while at the height of the Middle Ages Baptism came to include even young children. If a child died prematurely (i.e. unbaptized), its soul could not go to Heaven, nor could the body be buried in hallowed ground. Baptisms took place mainly on religious holidays (especially at Easter), and churches would have special baptismal fonts for the occasion — the Baptistery.
