However, he is also a staunch theologian and becomes insulted at the slightest blasphemy. If Henry suggests holding a duel to decide Johanka's fate, Jaroslav becomes annoyed, declaring it to be an ancient and paganistic practice. During the Bad Ending and the Worse Ending, he is visibly enraged determine to fix/be rid of Johanka, who describes as "a gangrenous limb of the Church".

His mission is to rid the Empire of heresy and blasphemy and promote obedience to the authority of the Church.

Biography

Jaroslav at some point was appointed Titular Bishop of Sarepta by Pope Boniface IX, although he lacked authority over his diocese due to its Muslim population. Before 1404, he had joined the Inquisition and gained a reputation for being skilled and smart.

He was summoned to Sasau and took residence at the local Monastery along with his assistant and several guards to investigate a report of heresy. He discovered Johanka was the subject of the investigation and quickly picked up local gossip on her as well as fear and respect from the locals. He gave her an order to stop preaching of the Virgin Mary, she quickly disobeyed this command.

She was arrested and awaited trial. Henry soon discovered this and questioned Jaroslav on what he could do in her defense. Jaroslav told Henry he could defend her and gather witnesses. The Inquisitor then gives Henry three days to complete this task before he finishes his investigation.

Following The Trial, Jaroslav will choose one of three possible punishments for Johanka:

  • The Good Ending: (Henry does an amazing job defending Johanka during the trial and provides sufficient evidence) Johanka apologizes for being hasty and not speaking with Father Fabian before preaching. As punishment, Jaroslav orders her to never preach again and she will need to visit the church every day. Essentially, he gives her a slap on the wrist.
    • It is revealed in this cutscene that Jaroslav genuinely believes that Johanka saw visions of the Virgin Mother and that he was only concerned with her not having told him or Father Fabian first. He holds her arm, comforting her, and asks Johanka to contact him through Father Fabian if she ever sees the Virgin Mother again.
    • This is the only ending where Johanka and Matthias are reunited following The Trial.
  • The Bad Ending: (Henry does an adequate job defending Johanka and either doesn't provide enough evidence or isn't able to rebut Johanka's accusers) Johanka apologizes for being hasty, but still defends her preaching. As punishment, Jaroslav has her flogged and sent to a convent.
  • The Horrible Ending: (Henry either makes no attempt to form a defense or fails most of Johanka's quests) Johanka refuses to apologize and speaks out against the Church. Enraged, Jaroslav has Johanka flogged and her tongue cut out. She later dies of her injuries.

No matter the verdict, Jaroslav will depart from Sasau with his allies following The Trial.
