Biography
During A Friend In Need..., Henry approaches him about hiring his carpenter friends Fritz and Matthew. Luckily, he is quite a pushover, and Henry can easily convince (or threaten, or bribe) him into giving them a chance.
When Henry visits the mill some some later, Oliver remarks that although the two are good carpenters, they appear to need constant supervision. Fritz and Matthew complain that the foreman just being too hard on them, and that he's clumsy and arrogant.
While Oliver trusts Thomas, he admits that he's not a very good miller. The reason he keeps him around is because Thomas was the only one who didn't abandon him after his son, Martin, the previous foreman, died. He is clearly still very affected by his sons death, describing him as a good and kind boy, and explains to Henry that he has had no luck keeping carpenters since his passing. Even Jane's sweetheart, another miller, left town soon after, which Oliver attributes to the young man's reluctance to work hard under Thomas, when Martin had been soft on them.
Jane sadly reflects that her father had lost most of his wits after Martin's death. Although he loved his daughter, Oliver was quick to dismiss her objections about Thomas, sure she was simply infatuated with Fritz or Matthew and was conspiring to get them the foreman job.
As it turns out, Thomas was responsible for Martin's death, which Henry uncovered in ...Is a Friend Indeed.
