Biography

He was known to be quite brutal with his underlings, and was very blunt with Henry when he inquired about work during A Friend In Need.... When questioned, Miller Oliver acknowledged that Old Thomas would always try his best, even if the task was too much for him.

During ...Is a Friend Indeed, when Henry came to check on Fritz and Matthew, they complained that Old Thomas was clumsy and arrogant, and always badgering them about the quality and speed of their work. Fritz is quite keen to beat Thomas (as revenge for Thomas throwing him in the pond), while Matthew asks Henry to approach the situation diplomatically. If questioned, Thomas will claim the only reason the two still have jobs was because he put in a good word for them with the Miller.

The Miller on the other hand, admits that Old Thomas isn't a particularly good miller, and always needs supervision, but he keeps him around because Thomas was the only one who remained after the Miller's son, the previous foreman, was killed in a wagon accident - an accident where a distinctive scarf of Martins was stolen. An accident where Old Thomas was the only witness.

If you follow banished Thomas, he will run all the way to Uzhitz tavern and then stand still there.

Soon afterwards, all the other employees left the mill, even Jane's sweetheart. The Miller is convinced that they had grown lazy under Martin's foreman-ship, and were annoyed at Thomas' demand for hard workers. Henry finds it suspicious that Thomas seems to angling to get the mill, or Jane, or both. When he confronts Thomas, the foreman claims he is just looking out for the mill, and Jane, certain that the two carpenters have wicked intentions and will leave her shamed.

Henry, after a thorough investigation (and perhaps a bit of light pick-pocketing) discovers that Old Thomas has Martin's scarf, and was probably involved in his death. If you choose, you can reveal Old Thomas's treachery.
