Historical context

Suchdol is a historic village dating to the 13th century, with a fort that has undergone several ownership changes and developments.

Suchdol is first mentioned in a Latin inscription dated 5 November 1257, when Lutherus of Suchdol owned property there. In 1266, Radlav of Suchdol is also mentioned, followed by Pešek of Suchdol. In 1356, Suchdol was bought by the wealthy Kuttenberg burgher Tomáš Velfin until 1358, followed by another Kuttenberg burgher Prokop, who acquired the property at an auction in 1366 until 1377.

In 1394, Lord Peter of Písek, a former mintmaster of Kuttenberg, purchased the estate and fortified it. During the Bohemian Civil War, Peter refused to ally with Sigismund of Luxembourg, prompting a siege of Suchdol by Prague's royal army under Commander Markvart von Aulitz on December 24, 1402.

In early January 1403, the fort surrendered alongside Kuttenberg. Peter was captured, taken to Sigismund’s camp, and compelled to surrender his other holdings, including Pirkenstein, which was granted to Sigismund’s ally, Nicholas of Jemniste.
