Conciliation crosses, or merely stones with a cross engraved into the surface, were erected in places where tragic events or important historical events in the life of the community or the country had occurred; they were closely linked to criminal law — a symbol of admission of guilt and a plea for forgiveness. The conciliation cross embodied repentance by the perpetrator of a crime, built at the culprit 's expense. In addition, conciliation crosses marked the boundaries of estates and municipalities.
