Biography

Hermann appears to have lived in Rattay for most of his life, and he harboured a deep affection for Elishka ever since they were children. The two would often chat, and Elishka remembers that he was always very kind to her. Unfortunately, she married a man who was later executed by Hermann. Although she bears him no ill-will, knowing that her husband deserved his fate, Hermann feels incredibly guilty and tries to take care of her, even allowing the young woman to live with him.

However, being an executioner, although a respected and well-paying position, made Hermann a social pariah. Nobody wanted to be seen talking to the man responsible for so many deaths, and Hermann reflects that even when he is dead, his body will be pushed into a grave with sticks to avoid touching his corpse. For this reason, Elishka is shunned by the people of Rattay, which causes her grief. Hermann, not wanting her to be unhappy, asks Henry to find her husband's family in Tough Love, hoping they can take her in. He is a selfless and quiet man, prepared to do the unenviable work required of him, even if it means he will be alone. He doesn't attempt to pressure Elishka to stay against her will, even though he is madly in love with her. Henry can either encourage Elishka to go and live with her abusive in-laws, or scold them both for being foolish and point out they are clearly in love with each other - to hell with what anyone else thinks.

Hermann and Elishka

During In God's Hands, Henry visits to ask his advice in setting bones, and he is able to give the young blacksmith enough information to save Thomas' life.

However, as seen in The Good Thief, Hermann is not above a bit of grave robbing, even if he does feel guilty after, and he is known for tailoring the execution to suit his liege lord's pleasure - a particularly hated criminal may find himself deprived of a quick hanging.

Later, Henry will discover that three notorious local thugs are to be executed, but Hermann is not to perform the execution. Instead the people of Rattay have hired the famous Executioner Heinz from Kuttenberg. Hermann is furious about the situation, considering it insulting that he isn't considered up to the prestigious task. Henry and Hermann scheme about how to botch the execution in order to make Heinz look bad in Money for Old Rope.
