Walkthrough

Sir Hans informs you of the newest development in his life. He professes his love for a girl named Karolina, the Butcher of Rattay's daughter, and describes her... virtues... with enthusiasm. He plans to court her in a way that's been all the rage in France: by convincing her that she has a secret admirer. First, after, you'll have to help him by recover his great-grandmother's necklace, and then he'll request that you bring the necklace and a love letter he wrote to the butcher's house. There, you'll leave it in a chest in her room for her to find.

Of course, Hans doesn't have the necklace. He lost it in a game of dice to a lucky player in Ledetchko. Head there and you'll discover that the player lost it to someone else, a merchant who mentioned that he'd be making camp by a footbridge northwest of Sasau. As you investigate, you'll progress through Game of Throws.

Once you have Lord Capon's necklace in hand, stash it in the chest in Karolina's room, along with Hans's letter. Go back to him and he'll ask you to obtain a Musk of Infinite Allure, which is sold by a Charlatan who peddles worthless trinkets as holy relics. Talk to the Charlatan, either in Sasau or, if you've already helped him once, in Ledetchko. You can either buy the recipe for the Musk of Infinite Allure for 2,000 Prague Groschen (or 4,000 Prague Groschen if you choose the "that's cheap!" option), or you can pickpocket/steal it from him. Alternatively, he'll brew the potion for you if you help him by completing the quest No Rest for the Wicked.

Once you retrieve Hans' necklace and brew the Musk of Infinite Allure, return to him. He'll hand you a book of poetry and tell you to study it while he prepares to call upon Karolina. Meet him in his room within Pirkstein Castle in the evening (20:00 - 21:00). Knock on his door, and he'll tell you something's gone wrong. You'll enter his room and see his face, red and swollen, as if he'd been stung by a hive of bees! It seems his immune system didn't agree with the Musk of Infinite Allure. He's unwilling to wait, so you can either offer an antidote - one Marigold decoction - or pass a Speech check to convince him that he looks fine. However, it's recommended to simply give him the antidote, as it'll take effect immediately and he'll be back to his pretty self.

Leave Pirkstein and follow Sir Hans to the church graveyard, next to the butcher's house. Hans commands you to hide in some bushes nearby and feed him lines of poetry. He calls out to Karolina, who hollers back at him from her second floor window. If you remember the poem in the book Hans gave you, great! (If you have read the poems it will be very obvious which of the poems you should read to Hans to get the "good" ending but reading "Ode to Woman" gives you a slightly funnier cutscene) But even if you tell him the right lines, he'll botch them. There may be more than one correct series of options, but sticking to the first poem in the book seems to woo Karolina:

  • "Gentle night..."
  • "And now my heart in sorrow dwells..."
  • "Ah Lord, let me not wait in vain..."
  • When Karolina remarks that Hans is reciting some... unique poetry, choose to blame the French.

Unfortunately, Hans's hollering draws the attention of the butcher himself. He appears in the graveyard with two friends to defend his daughter's honor. Hans gets out of the graveyard before the butcher sees him. He plans to sneak up to Karolina's room and tells you to buy him some time.

The easiest way to do so is to pass all of the Speech checks. Then, when the butcher finally sees through your honeyed words, start singing. Keep singing until he's convinced you're a loon and leaves you in peace. If you do it correctly, you'll give Lord Capon enough time for a wonderful meeting with Karolina. Other checks, such as the Charm checks, may work as well, but if the butcher leaves early or starts fighting you before Hans is done, the young lord won't have enough time to finish his business.

Regardless of the outcome, return to Hans the next morning and ask how it went. If it went well, a glowing Hans will describe it as the best night of his life. You'll ask when he plans to see Karolina again, to which Hans replies: never! Such a relationship is a beautiful, temporary thing, and besides, he's a nobleman and she's the butcher's daughter. She can't even read! She returned his love letter to him, unopened, which he passes on to you. If his night didn't go so well, he'll be upset, but he'll always have more wenches to pursue in the future. In this case, he'll also give you the love letter.

Notes

  • While it is listed as a side quest, this one is required to ride off with Capon and finish a playthrough if you own its DLC. If you put it off until Epilogue, you may ride with Capon to the camp near Neuhof, but he will start the quest once there and ride all the way back to Rattay.
  • If Hans is successful, then after talking to him the next morning, a cutscene will play with Lord Hanush talking to the butcher. Somehow, the latter has discovered that it was Lord Capon who fornicated with his daughter, and he tries to blackmail Hanush by bringing up the possibility of a "lasting reminder" of the encounter - a child. Hanush scolds him, but ultimately gives the butcher what he wants: a purse of Groschen. Then, he exclaims in frustration that he'll have Hans' balls on a platter.
  • If you kill the butcher, the quest fails, but you can still talk to Hans about it. Henry will confess and will say he got rid of the butcher to make things easier for Hans, while Hans will call him an animal and tell Henry to get out of his sight until he calms down.
  • Killing Karolina leads to no comments but seems to be somewhat scripted: even if performed stealthily in the city, it immediately alerts the guards and assigns a prison penalty. However, you can also easily stealth kill her while she's walking back to Rattay from the nearby river - since she often will do this at least a bit past dark, it's very possible to do this with no witnesses around. You may then walk into Rattay the next morning with nobody any wiser.
  • Because this quest is required to complete the game if you own its DLC, killing the butcher or Karolina are the only remaining ways to fully finish a playthrough as an illiterate Henry. If you managed to progress up to this point without learning to read, Capon will still force you to so that you can read the love poems for him.
