Biography

She was originally promised to Hanekin Hare, but Nicholas, who was in love with her too, accused his rival of murder during a feast in the Talmberg castle in 1388.

Hare was imprisoned, but escaped and plotted his revenge. Fifteen years later, Henry finds out about their history during Hare Hunt, after Nicholas asks him to investigate some local poachers. The poachers were not merely killing for food, but were leaving carcasses behind for Nicholas to find, and even put antlers on Nicholas' home, leading Henry to suspect that they were out to discredit the Master Huntsman.

Blacksmith's Betty would confess to Henry that Margaret had let slip that she had seen Hare, even spoken to him (and perhaps more) - something she warns Henry not to tell Nicholas about, or he'd surely kill Margaret. According to Betty, Margaret and Hare had been in love, although Margaret denied it once she was married. Olena described her as a "flighty lass", not able to decide between the two men.

Henry kidnaps Margaret

When Henry questions Margaret herself, at first she does not want to talk about Hare. After some convincing, she claims that she never wanted to marry him, and talk of their love was just rumours. However, Hare evidently believes differently, as he showed up in the woods, told her he still loved her, and begged her to run away with him. If she agrees, he tells her to hang a garland on her house as a signal to him.

If Henry chooses to question Hare, he will learn the truth - that Hare did love Margaret, and was with her the night of the murder. But rather than tell the truth, and presumably lose Nicholas, who was the one she truly loved, Margaret denied having seen Hare that evening, meaning he had no alibi when Nicholas accused him and was arrested.

Hare, out to clear his name, may enlist Henry's help to blackmail Nicholas to sign a confession. To do this, Henry kidnaps Margaret. Nicholas, finally realizing that the game was up, signed the document, and he and Margaret flee the land.
