Polearms and spears are a type of weapon in Kingdom Come: Deliverance. Henry can pick these up when dropped by opponents and use them, but cannot move them into his inventory by ordinary means, so they can only be dropped after use.

Both have a long shaft with a sharpened head, generally made from iron or steel. They can be used to thrust and strike in all directions except overhead. A Feint can be executed with a high or low attack, but not left to right. They can block incoming attacks, but can not be used to Perfect Block. Users can not utilize, or be engaged by a master-strike. Users can not dodge when using spears, but spear attacks can be dodged. Spears are designed mainly for thrusting attacks, and maintaining distance in combat. Polearms however can generally be used to thrust and strike. They are often abandoned for shorter weapons in close range combat or if mobility is urgently needed.

Strategy and Tactics

  • Though they are rare to find, they can potentially be overpowered, as they are capable of dealing almost twice the stab and slash damage of even the best swords and maces in the game. Because of this, they will often one-shot most opponents who aren't wearing some form of plate, brigandine, or lamellar.
  • These weapons are so powerful that, in mounted combat, at least half of them will take out opponents in only one or two strikes even at a canter, regardless of how heavily armored they may be. By comparison, even the strongest swords require a full gallop to feasibly instakill enemies in heavier armor.
  • Polearms can use normal blocks, and be blocked normally.
  • It is not possible to Perfect Block while using a polearm, but polearm strikes can be blocked with a Perfect Block. Be wary of enemy counter-attacks if they deflect your polearm. Since you cannot perfect block in return if using a polearm, and you can not dodge, the only way to avoid these is to block, or back up or sidestep and hope you get out of range.
  • One can not master-strike while using a polearm, nor to master-strike an enemy who is using one. This can be used to one's advantage against more skilled enemies who could otherwise master-strike you easily.
  • Polearm users are not affected by the unique animations of combos, so they can recover quicker than people wielding other weapon classes. This is most notable if attempting a combo such as Run Through on a polearm wielder, which is ill-advised as Henry is essentially leaving himself open for free counterattacks.
  • Despite their many strengths, polearms come with some serious drawbacks unique to their class. This prevents them from being truly overpowered especially without various mods or tweaks:
    • Polearm users cannot sprint even if they are not overburdened, which makes fleeing or chasing enemies un-viable on foot. Players will find themselves using their horse more often to help move faster when travelling with a polearm.
    • They cannot be carried in towns without angering guards and villagers, which requires one to drop them somewhere passerby won't loot them.
    • In addition to not being sold by any vendors, polearms cannot be stored in chests or your horse. However, it is possible to force them into your inventory by repairing them at a blacksmith - this effect persists until the polearm is manually dropped and must be repeated afterwards.
    • Since drawing them can anger villagers, this trick is best performed with the Talmberg blacksmith since he works at the very edge of the Talmberg quarry where the player will need to pass by less people.
    • Polearms do not have any special combos.

Notes

  • These weapons can be seen wielded mostly in larger scale battles and random skirmishes. Both low and high level enemies can spawn with them, though like with other weapon classes, stronger enemies carry stronger polearms.
  • Sometimes one of these can be found on a body in the inventory, allowing the weapon to be carried in an unequipped state, but it still cannot be moved to a horse or stored in the storage chest, and once equipped, cannot be "sheathed" again.
  • When fighting NPCs who spawn with polearms, note that they can instantly recover their polearm even if separated (e.g. when entering a new fight after being forced to leave their weapon when surrendering.) Their polearms may also sometimes disappear instead of dropping on the ground if they are instantly killed, such as by a bow at range.
  • If using a polearm, you may drop it without entering the inventory simply by drawing your normal melee weapon with its respective hotkey. Dropping the polearm in your inventory will leave you with your other melee weapon still sheathed upon exiting the inventory. Some other actions such as picking up items on the ground will also force you to drop your polearm.
  • The internal name for this class of weapon is "Heavy".
  • You can carry a polearm in your inventory with a glitch:
    1. First you need a polearm that can be repaired and a blacksmiths kit (only weapons or gear above 60 hp can be repaired by Henry, threshold might be higher if you have low Maintenance skill).
    2. Second you need a regular weapon (not a bow) , a shield and a torch.
    3. Third equip both a regular weapon and a torch at the same time, then pick up the polearm.
    4. Fourth you need to repair the polearm with a blacksmiths kit (If it is at 100 hp you can damage it by hitting things like trees, rocks or most objects).
    5. Last you need to equip a shield. If you look in your inventory you should now have a regular weapon, shield and a polearm equipped, you can now equip/unequip weapons and torches as you wish and the polearm should still be in your inventory. Too equip the polearm again you have too drop it on the ground and pick it back up too have it equipped again.
    6. If you wish to store it in your inventory again just repeat the steps from the start.
      • You can also carry a polearm and a shield at the same time with a glitch, and Master Striking is also possible when carrying both a polearm and shield or torch at the same time:
        1. First Repeat Steps 1-4 (in addition requires a Horse)
        2. Second you need to mount a horse.
        3. Third unequip the torch and your regular weapon while still mounted.
        4. Last equip the shield while still mounted, now you should have a polearm and a shield equipped simultaneously, you can now unmount if you want. Do note you can not run while wielding a polearm, and if you switch weapons, pull out a torch or pick up a weapon you will drop the polearm.
        5. If you wish to equip a polearm and a shield again just repeat the steps from the start.
