St. Nicholas' Church

Probably the older of the two churches within the castle walls. The first mention dates from 1343. It was located in the upper part of Rattay before the upper wall and partially served as a presbytery. From 1336 the Korecnik Mill also belonged to the Rattay presbytery.

The Frescoes

Right of the entrance:

  • Top left: Christ being whipped prior to his condemnation. Not part of the traditional stations of the cross.
  • Bottom left: The infant Christ is worshipped by the old Simeon prior to Christ's circumcision. The two women are Mary Mother of God and presumably her relative, Elizabeth, mother of Saint John the Baptist.

Opposite side of the entrance:

  • Top middle: Adam and Eve are banished from the Garden of Eden. An Angel with a sword of flames guards the entrance to the garden (which is depicted as the "City of God" here). According to scripture there should be two angels and Adam and Eve should have been given clothes by God.
  • Bottom middle: Jesus dining with the Pharisees. A prostitute (identified as Mary Magdalen in old tradition) cries upon his feet and dries them with her hair.

Altar:

  • Middle: Mary Mother of God with infant Christ.
  • Left: A beatified King - might be Saint Wenceslaus, Duke of Bohemia (Good King Wenceslas)
  • Right: A beatified monk or hermit - might be Saint Procopius

The other people depicted in the church - as with shrines and crosses - are Kickstarter backers of the game, depicted as saints. Some of them are actually dressed as bishops or monks, some are wearing clothes in which biblical people are depicted in. There are 12 people - a possible reference to the 12 apostles.

Despite the name of the church, there is no depiction of Saint Nicholas - though there might be a relic in the altar.
