Dead Men Tell No Tales is a side quest in Kingdom Come: Deliverance. It is intertwined with the Rattay Tourney. The Blacksmith's son was killed after winning Sir Hanush's tourney for the common folk, and nobody knows for sure what really happened. To bring peace to a grieving father, Henry agrees to investigate.

You might need some Antidote.

Synopsis

Svatopluk, the Samopesh blacksmith's son, died under very suspicious circumstances after winning the Rattay Tourney some years ago.

Objectives

  • Try to find out how Svatopluk, the blacksmith's son, died.
    • Tell the blacksmith what you've found out.

Walkthrough

Henry speaks to the local Samopesh Innkeeper, who tells him that the blacksmith is depressed due to the recent announcement that Sir Hanush is holding a tourney for the common folk. Go and speak to the Blacksmith, who will tell you about his son Svatopluk.

The young man was an enthusiastic fighter, and had enrolled in a tourney some years before. He defeated all challengers, including Black Peter. However, the next day, Svatopluk was found suffering from a severe fever, and quickly died. Although the blacksmith suspected Black Peter's involvement, he admits there is no proof. Henry offers to investigate, and the Blacksmith promises to reward him if he can find out the truth.

Speaking with Black Peter at the Rattay Tourney

After speaking to him, you will also launch the activity Rattay Tourney, which gives Henry the opportunity compete in the tournament yourself. While in Rattay, speak with the Herald, who tells you about the previous year's competition. Apparently, both Black Peter and Svatopluk were exceptional fighters - but while Svatopluk was popular amongst the townspeople, the master of ceremonies considered Black Peter to be arrogant.

Wait until Black Peter has finished his first round, or simply arrive at the Upper Castle at first light (around 7AM) and take the opportunity to talk to him before enrolling in the tournament yourself. He will tell you that although he understands why people suspect him, he respected Svatopluk for being one of the few worthy opponents in the land.

If you're just wanting to complete the quest quickly, then enroll in and throw the Tourney, before travelling back to Samopesh to tell the Blacksmith that you couldn't find out what happened to his son. He's disappointed, but thanks you for your efforts and gives you 50 Prague Groschen.

Black Peter's trap

However, if you're a skilled fighter and want to complete the investigation, you'll need to win the tournament against Black Peter. Don't worry if you lose one - you will have at least five opportunities.

Once you're announced as the victor, finalize your business in Rattay (collecting your winnings from Peshek, Hans and Hanush as applicable), then ride back towards Samopesh via the Mill of Rattay. Don't fast travel. Take the right hand path past Peshek's house, where Black Peter has laid a trap for you - a rope strung between two of the trees that will knock you off your horse. He'll immediately ambush you, outraged that he was defeated.

You can run away, back to Samopesh, but you wont be able to tell the Blacksmith the full story - he'll be disappointed to never find out what happened to Svatopluk, and will give you 70 Prague Groschen.

To find out the truth, defeat Black Peter again. There are 2 ways:

1) STEALTH: If you don't feel like fighting him, maybe to preserve his kits or your own in good conditions, and know exactly the location of the ambush, you can very well stealthily knock him out/stealth kill him. A good strategy for this is to approach him from the north of Peshek's Mill, do that by maneuvering around the ambush location. There Peter will be seen taking turns sitting down on a rock then going out on the road to wait for you, all the while with his back turned to you. Either rush to him, quickly crouch and knock him out or reach him stealthily and take him out. Peter may be able to counter your takedown if Henry is still too much of a peasant, so it's recommended your Strength (Knock Out) and Agility (Stealth Kill) is high enough. After all is said and done, you'll find Peter either unconscious or dead, loot his body. You'll find he has some valuable gear, and also carries a poisoned Page's sword - proof that he murdered Svatopluk. Return to Samopesh and tell the Blacksmith what truly happened to his son.

Outcome 1: He is relieved to finally know what happened and asks what about Peter. If you successfully take down Peter without bloodshed, Henry will tell the Blacksmith that Peter managed to get away and is probably miles away by then. He'll be slightly disappointed but thank you for trying, and will reward you 70 Prague Groschen.

Outcome 2: He is relieved to finally know what happened, and grateful that you avenged his son, only if you send Peter to Hell where he belongs by stomping his face in or any other methods. You'll be given 85 Prague Groschen and received the highest Reputation boost in Samopesh.

2) COMBAT: Quite straightforward. Just go for it. Take him on with honour if you're up for it. After all you've defeated him once before. Be careful not to let him cut you, or you'll be poisoned. Once he's dead, search his body. Take the poisoned Page's sword. Return to Samopesh and tell the Blacksmith what truly happened to his son. He is relieved to finally know what happened, and grateful that you avenged his son, so he gives you 85 Prague Groschen.

Immersion and Continuity

Since this quest was added after the game's release it introduces slight continuity and immersion problems. Some of the dialogue of Henry with the Blacksmith doesn't make sense if Henry already knows about the tournament, which means this quest should be started before going to meet Radzig Kobyla in Rattay, which triggers the first Tournament and alerts Henry to it's existence. However, the story line contains no hints that would lead Henry to Samopesh and find out about the Blacksmith's problems. On the other hand, several dialogue options with the Herald of Rattay go missing or become non-sensical if Henry already won a tournament before starting this quest. There are two ways to resolve this for best immersion and story line continuity:

The first option is to not fight the Tourney before having started this quest. However, the first time that Henry has any reason to visit Samopesh is either travelling through it during In God's Hands or when asking for grain supplies during Supplies, which both happen relatively late in the game.

The second, better option is to explore the map early (before meeting Sir Radzig) and basically happen upon the tip-off from the Innkeeper of Samopesh 'by chance'. As an added bonus, this will also alert you to the quest A Man of the Cloth, which is a prerequisite of In God's Hands. However, this method is dangerous as Henry does not have had combat training with Captain Cheerful yet, so he will need to be prepared to flee or evade combat along the road from Neuhof mill to Samopesh.

Notes

  • You should speak to Sir Hans and begin Capon's Champion prior to enrolling in the Tourney. Not only will he pay your entry fee, but it will save you having to compete a second time, unless you're a skilled combatant. This option does only exist after finishing the quest Next to Godliness.
  • If you have already won a Rattay Tourney, it is possible for Black Peter to ambush you before you begin the quest. If you then talk to the Blacksmith and begin the quest, you can finish it immediately within the same dialogue.
  • If you kill Black Peter during the ambush before he has spotted you, for instance by putting an arrow through his head from a distance, Henry will only tell the blacksmith that Black Peter is dead, but won't reveal that he killed him. It's just a different dialogue though. As long as you loot the poisoned sword from the corpse you will get the full reward of 85 coin.
  • For this quest to become available, just waking up at the Rattay Mill is not enough - you also need to have completed the Main Quest Awakening.
