Detailed walkthrough

With Sir Radzig heading for his camp near Merhojed, and Captain Bernard going back to Rattay, Henry must go to Uzhitz to find the limping bandit. Unfortunately, a large crowd, including the Bailiff, has gathered outside by the time he arrives.

As Henry approaches, he overhears the Bailiff saying he needs to send word to Sir Hanush. Henry identifies himself as part of Hanush's entourage, investigating the raid at Neuhof. At first, the Bailiff is suspicious and denies that his people were involved. However, he realizes Henry is right when he mentions the limping bandit. The Bailiff pushes open the door of the house to show Henry Limpy Lubosh's mutilated corpse. Henry asks permission to continue his investigation, and the Bailiff fully supports him. From here, the two immediate options are questioning the crowd or investigating Lubosh's house.

Investigating Lubosh's house

The mutilated remains of Limpy Lubosh

If the player investigates Lubosh's house, Henry will have the option to examine the crime scene. Examining Lubosh's body and head suggests he was gutted after being knocked out, hence the lack of a commotion. Additionally, his ordinary tarred jacket can be found under the pile of hay next to his body, while his Robber's sword can be found behind a stack of firewood. This gives an extra dialogue option with the Bailiff.

The inscription zrádce ("traitor") is written in Lubosh's blood on the wall. Regardless of whether Henry can read, he deduces that it is a warning to an unknown party that at least one of the bandits involved was literate. If Henry is literate, he will read it as "Judas" and conclude that the bandits had a falling out. In any case, it soon becomes clear that no further insights can be gained from Lubosh's house. From here, Henry must ask around the Uzhitz townsfolk to continue his investigation.

Asking the townsfolk

Through questioning the locals, Henry learns that Lubosh was a small-time crook and drunk who mainly kept to himself. However, some report that he had recently been seen in the company of the local priest, Father Godwin, and nobody remembers seeing him in Uzhitz on the day of the raid.

Father Godwin's vows

The local priest, Father Godwin, lives near the church and is most often either practicing swordplay outside his house or praying inside the church. When asked about Lubosh, Godwin will remark that he was a lost soul — simple and rough, but not bad at heart. He eventually reveals that he knows what Lubosh was doing on the night of the raid, but much to Henry's frustration, he cannot break his vows to reveal it. From here, a persuasion check allows Henry to convince Godwin otherwise.

Drinking with Father Godwin

If Henry is successful, Godwin will acknowledge that saving innocent lives may be worth breaking the confessional seal. The quest will end here, and On the Scent will immediately start. If Henry is unsuccessful, Godwin will remain adamant in his confessional vow. Failing with the Intimidation option will take this one step further by allowing the option to fistfight him or back down. Regardless of how Henry fails, even if he wins a fistfight, Godwin will still agree to think about how to help without breaking his vows. He invites Henry to join him at the local tavern that evening.

That night, Godwin and his concubine can be found inside the tavern. Chat with Godwin about Skalitz and your family before discussing what happened at Neuhof. If Henry does not try to confide in him, Godwin will refuse to share further information and cut off their conversation.

If Henry does choose to confide in Father Godwin, Godwin will still refuse to break the confessional vow, but will tell Henry about the importance of a good and entertaining sermon, and begins berating the Catholic Church for their greed, hypocrisy and corruption. He will also advise Henry to read the sermons of John Hus, copies of which he keeps as the presbytery.

Drunken debauchery

Henry and Godwin continue drinking and cavorting, getting more drunk. The Bailiff interrupts and has the two men thrown out of the tavern, starting a brawl. Afterwards, a drunken Henry continues to fade in and out of consciousness, remembering only snippets of the evening - climbing the bell tower, having sex with the alehouse maid, pretending to be sheep, and greeting the dawn before Godwin starts throwing up, and Henry passes out again.

Giving the sermon

Preaching at Uzhitz

Finally, the two are awakened at Godwin's house by his concubine, who reminds them that a hungover Godwin has to lead Mass - something he is in no fit state to do. Godwin, therefore, recruits Henry to do so in his place, using one of Jan Hus' sermons. In return, Godwin will tell him all about Lubosh's cronies. To give the sermon, Henry must pass several skill checks to give a convincing Mass and appease the villagers.

If the people have left Mass satisfied, Father Godwin will praise Henry's oratory skills and finally mention the names of Limpy's gang as outlined in the Black Chronicle: Timmy, Pious, and Reeky. Otherwise, he will call off the deal and refuse to help Henry further.

The Rattay scribe

If at any point Henry fails to get the information from Godwin, whether by messing up the sermon, failing to gain his trust or by not meeting him at the tavern, he will still need to get the information another way. The player character will need to talk to the Bailiff, who will suggest seeing the Scribe of Rattay and checking his records.

To get the scribe's help reading the Black Chronicle, the player will need to get him some Embrocation potion for his joint pain. Give the scribe the medicine, and he will look at the records, finally telling Henry to look for Reeky from Ledetchko. Alternatively, the player can pick the very hard lock on the door to the room containing the book and read it directly. This will only work if Henry is already literate since the scribe will not be there to help read it.

Strategies

  • A Bard potion or an Amor potion may be used to increase Speech or Charisma to convince Father Godwin to share information on Lubosh immediately. Both are for sale from Herbwoman Gertrude, who lives in the woods east of Uzhitz.
  • An Embrocation potion can be quickly bought from Apothecary Konyash, whose shop is downstairs of the Scribe's quarters.
  • If the player wishes to drink with Godwin regardless of stats, the easiest method is to pick the Intimidation option. This will always fail; whether Henry continues to fight or back down, Godwin will invite him to the tavern.
  • When helping Godwin in the tavern brawl, drawing Henry's weapons will immediately fail the objective. Additionally, the Bailiff will immediately attempt to arrest Henry.
  • After waking up with Godwin, Henry will have his clothing unequipped. Be sure to put it back on unless you want to preach in underwear.
  • A Hair o' the Dog potion may be used to negate Henry's drunkenness and/or hangover before giving his sermon. Keep in mind this comes with a minor Charisma debuff.
  • During the sermon, each stat check has one option that will always succeed regardless of Henry's stats. The other two follow the normal rules of persuasion. The options with guaranteed success are those that convey Henry's confidence:
    • Begin the sermon confidently. (Charisma)
    • Continue harshly. (Badassness)
    • Continue harshly. (Badassness)
  • Each stat check is followed by a topic choice which also affects the villagers' approval. For each of these topics, there is a good, neutral, and poor choice. The good choice will excite the crowd, the neutral choice will bore the crowd but not offend them, and the poor choice will turn the crowd against Godwin.
  • Based on the above rules, the following options for the sermon will always succeed regardless of Henry's stats:
    • Begin the sermon confidently. (Charisma)
      • God stands at the head of the church (good) OR It is not man, but God who is ruler of the world (neutral)
    • Continue harshly. (Badassness)
      • To sin is human (good) OR Talk about the sin of fornication (neutral)
    • Continue harshly. (Badassness)
      • Criticize the prelates, but stand up for Godwin (good) OR Try some quote to conclude (neutral)
  • A successful sermon is possible if other dialogue options are picked, though this follows complicated rules. Generally, topic choice is weighed more heavily than the stat checks: two failed stat checks can still allow success if all three good topics are chosen, but two poor topics will fail any sermon.

Notes

  • When Bernard returns to Rattay at the start of this quest, it is common for him to inexplicably abandon his horse partway back and walk the rest of the way. His horse may remain here for the rest of the playthrough.
  • If Henry finds Lubosh's gambeson, he may report this to the Bailiff for additional dialogue. The Bailiff will be shocked that Lubosh was not only a crook, but someone willing to murder.
  • When Godwin is practicing swordplay outside his home, he refuses to talk and cannot be interacted with. The player must wait for him to finish.
  • If the Rattay scribe already received an Embrocation during another quest, he will agree to help Henry immediately.
