Courtship

From Kingdom Come: Deliverance Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

Courtship is a side quest in Kingdom Come: Deliverance. If enough time has passed after Awakening, Henry begins to think about Theresa. Otherwise, during Keeping the Peace, he tells the watchman Nightingale about how she saved him from Runt (or how he saved her from Cumans). Nightingale knowingly comments that Henry should go and thank her properly.

Background

Theresa, Miller Peshek's niece, is a good friend of mine from Skaltiz. I've known her since we were children, and we've been through a lot together.

Detailed walkthrough

After returning to Skalitz to bury his parents, Henry suffers serious wounds at the hands of Runt. There, he is rescued by Theresa and troops led by Sir Robard of Talmberg. Later, Miller Peshek and Theresa nurse Henry's wounds at the Rattay Mill until Henry is well enough to set off on his own again during Awakening.

After enough time has passed, or at Nightingale's prompting in Keeping the Peace, Henry will be able to ask Theresa out and catch up.

First date

Henry and Theresa chat by the river

For the first date, Theresa will be willing to go between 07:00 and 12:00. Invite her to walk along the river. Henry and Theresa will chat about travelling, the preacher Jan Hus, and the handsome priest at St. James'. At this point, Theresa will challenge Henry to a race. Jog up the path until you see a small meadow on your left, where Theresa will invite you to sit with her.

Theresa will note that she heard Henry is now in the service of Sir Radzig, and asks Henry what it is like to serve nobility. The two will then laugh and flirt for a while before walking back to the mill. Both Henry and Theresa had a good time and would like to meet again soon - though definitely not too soon.

Second date

Theresa teaches Henry to dance

After three days, Henry's mind will wander back to his favorite mill-maid, and she may be taken out for a second date. Theresa will agree to go between 16:00 and 20:00, this time for dinner. She states she has never been to a tavern before and promises to try some ale if you take her to the Broken Wheel Tavern.

As the two walk up the hill to Rattay, they reminisce about life in Skalitz, and Henry's tavern diving habits. Henry's cooking skills are so abysmal that Fritz still gets nauseous at the mention of his oat cakes, and taverns are where he must go if he wants a proper meal. Theresa will also ask if he meets many girls at bathhouses and taverns. Henry will reply he likes a different sort - "all mouth and green eyes."

Theresa takes care of Henry

The two will enjoy a meal at the tavern, and Theresa will take Henry to dance. All is going well until a drunken villager approaches them. He tries to get Theresa to dance with him and becomes angry when she rebuffs him. Henry, ever the hero, jumps in to defend Theresa. Fight off the drunkard - whether or not you succeed will not affect the outcome of the date.

Once the drunkard is seen off, Theresa will tend to the slightly battered-looking Henry. Henry insists it does not hurt, though Theresa sees through his facade. After patching him up, Theresa calls him her hero, as Henry insists he is able to walk her home.

Theresa kisses Henry

At the doorstep, Henry tells Theresa that spending time with her may be painful, but never dull. The two hover awkwardly as Henry says she should go inside before Peshek starts fretting. In response, Theresa kisses him firmly before entering the mill. Henry is surprised by her forwardness, but does not mind.

Third date

After enough time has passed, speak to Theresa again during the day. This time she wants to play 'Blind Man's Bluff' - a game for children, but one that she always enjoyed. The two will go to the nearby barn and begin the game where no one can see. Hide from Theresa or let her catch you, the outcome will not change.

Henry and Theresa make love

By this time, it will start to rain, and Theresa realizes that she left the laundry out. Hurry over to the washing line and pick up the aprons to help her put them away. Henry suggests putting them by the fire to dry, but Theresa points out this will make them reek of smoke. Instead, they should lay out the laundry in the barn.

In the barn, a sudden lightning bolt makes Theresa jump, and Henry playfully teases her about being scared of storms. After some more forwardness from Theresa, the two kiss and lie down in the hay to make love. The following day, Henry awakens in the barn to find Theresa has already gone, and he smiles to himself.

Confirming the relationship

If the player has the A Woman's Lot DLC, they may continue developing Henry's romance with Theresa after the third date and formally finishing this quest.

After concluding the third date with Theresa, Henry may speak with her again, prompting Theresa to ask what he sees between the two of them. The player now has the choice to confirm a relationship with Theresa, or refuse to commit. The former will allow Henry to periodically take Theresa out on more dates, which provide the Smitten buff and feature various conversations depending on the game's progress. It will also allow Theresa to repair Henry's equipped clothing once a day and periodically gift him goodies when spoken to.

Refusing to commit to a relationship will leave Theresa brokenhearted and angry, as she is hurt that Henry only sees her as good enough for a roll in the hay. She will refuse to talk to Henry further for an extended period of time, and the player will not be able to rekindle a romance with her.

Strategies

  • It is possible with very low Speech or Charisma to fail the stat checks during the first date with Theresa, though the Badassness option will always succeed with her.
  • During the brawl in the second date, the drunkard will fight unarmed unless Henry draws his weapon. However, fighting him with weapons will not be treated as a crime, even if he is killed.
  • Theresa will not actually track the player while playing Blind Man's Bluff, even with maximum Noise. If the player wants to "win", they only need to not run directly at her.
  • Talking to Theresa at any point with the Alpha Male perk will cause her to get suspicious that Henry is cheating. This will prompt a persuasion check where the player must lie or come clean.
    • Confessing to cheating OR failing a persuasion attempt will cause Theresa to break off the relationship and fail this quest.

Notes

  • The player may not initiate this quest before Henry muses about Theresa OR before being prompted by Nightingale. Attempting to do so will only cause Theresa to tell Henry she needs time to settle in.
  • Completing this quest will unlock the achievement McLovin but will prevent the Virgin achievement from being unlocked for that playthrough.
  • Straying too far from Theresa during a date will cause it to fail. If it is during the initial conversation, she will return to the mill and refuse to go again until she had enough time to cool down.
  • While Theresa says she has never been to a tavern before the second date, during her playable section of A Woman's Lot DLC, she will visit Bianca at Tavern of Skalitz. It is likely that she simply means she has never been to a tavern to drink and socialize.
  • Despite what is implied by the cutscene, no world time actually passes during the end of the third date.
