Detailed walkthrough
Henry awakens the day after the battle of Pribyslavitz in Rattay, where he has been rewarded with a private room at Pirkstein Castle. Go to the Upper Castle, where Sir Hanush and Sir Radzig are listening to a report from Captain Bernard. As it turns out, battle has not stopped the bandit raids, and Merhojed has just been attacked. Luckily, the locals were able to defend themselves and have even captured an injured bandit.
At that moment, Master Tobias Feyfar enters with the chest of coins recovered from Pribyslavitz - unfortunately, they are all well made forgeries. Hanush is livid about such a large amount of coin being worthless, while Radzig and Feyfar see more grim implications. Not only does their unknown enemy have a secret forge, several skilled craftsmen, and access to a mine, they essentially have unlimited coin. Fortunately, this narrows down their potential hiding places. Radzig therefore dispatches Henry to interrogate the captive bandit and find out where the bandits are now hiding.
Pestilence in Merhojed
While the player has the option to immediately seek the captive, Henry will muse during Bernard's report that Matthias went to Merhojed after the raid on Skalitz, and he has the option to find out what happened to his friend. Either ask a local about Matthias, or find him yourself. Matthias will be lying in the stud farm with a broken arm. He is not yet sick, so ask him about the recent raid.
Matthias recounts how about twenty bandits tried to launch an assault on the town at dusk, and that they were speaking to themselves in Czech. The woodcutter's son, Straw, saw the bandits approaching and was able to warn the villagers in time to launch an assault. The men and women alike fended off the bandits, but Straw was killed in the defense. Now his father Old Straw is baying for blood, and Melichar (who took charge after Smil died at Neuhof,) is likely to let him to take his revenge on the captive bandit. From here, the player may also ask Matthias about the plague, beginning Pestilence.
Go find the bailiff Melichar. Melichar will refuse to let Henry speak to the bandit until his people are cured, and attempting to bypass him will only lead him to cut the conversation short. If the player hears him out, Melichar will remark that the bandit is also afflicted, so the bandit will need the remedy anyway before he can be questioned. He suggests to seek Johanka at the Sasau Monastery, who Matthias knows. Either sneak past Melichar and investigate the bandit anyway, or take on the Pestilence quest and cure him.
Successfully curing the bandit
Once you have delivered the cure to the town, Melichar will give you permission to see the bandit and cure him as well. If the bandit was successfully cured, he will be sober enough to be properly interrogated.
The cured bandit will prove cooperative, hoping for a quick death by hanging once all is done. He tells Henry that the he was paid by Runt, and Runt in turn was paid by "the Chief". The bandit though knows little about the Chief, besides the fact he was rich, spoke like a noble, and is not Czech. Furthermore, the Chief arranged the attack on Merhojed to remind the local lords that he was still out there after they triumphed at Pribyslavitz. As it turns out, the bandit camp at Pribyslavitz was only the beginning of the Chief's master plan.
The prisoner also reveals that he was the one who delivered the forged coins and letters he received from a merchant named Menhart. As luck would have it, he is due to meet him at the crossroads near Rovna soon. Henry demands the letter the bandit is carrying, but when the bandit hears he may be turned over to the executioner, he is terrified.
At that moment, Melichar bursts in, with Old Straw right behind him. The old man has finally snapped, and demands that Henry let him torture and kill the bandit. Henry can step aside and let the man have his revenge, beat him into submission, or convince him to let the brigand face the justice of the Rattay hangman. If the bandit is still alive at the end, Henry must escort him to the Rattay jail to await his sentencing, before going to the Talmberg lookout point to speak with Sir Radzig.
Failing to cure the bandit
If the player administered the wrong cure or failed to treat the bandit in time, they will need to go back to Melichar and find out what the villagers did with the bandit's body. Melichar will reveal that it has been thrown in a pit outside the village, and Henry will need to dig up the body with a shovel in order to get take his letter.
If Henry can read, he can further learn that the writer, "S", has discovered the full scope of what the counterfeiting operation entails, and wants out. He warns the recipient, "T", that a certain German knight has been hanging around Sasau, asking questions.
Final report to Sir Radzig
Regardless of how the player obtains information from the bandit, they must finish the quest by going to the Talmberg lookout point to speak with Sir Radzig. Radzig will pay 375 to Henry for his investigation. Furthermore, depending on what the player found out, he will instruct Henry to go to Rovna to find Menhart, or to Sasau to find the German Knight. The two will then discuss the greater meaning of all their trials before Henry leaves to continue his quest. Once he is out of earshot, Radzig quietly says "good luck, son."
Strategies
- While Melichar will refuse to let Henry speak to the bandit before administering a cure, the player may still break into the barn holding the bandit by bribing Melichar's maid for 15
or lockpicking the Hard door.
- The watchman outside the door cannot be persuaded to let Henry in.
- In the case Henry sees the bandit without a cure, he will note that the bandit is too sick to be questioned. However, the player may still loot the Captive's letter from the bandit by either pickpocketing him, knocking him out, or killing him, upon which they may report to Radzig after finding it.
- This progression route will end the quest the same way as finding the letter from the dead bandit. Even if the player leaves the bandit alive, Henry will remark that he is dead.
Notes
- If Henry breaks into the barn holding the bandit before speaking to any villagers and finding out about the plague, he will be confused as to why the bandit appears sick.
- Reporting to Radzig with the bandit's letter without finding out about the plague will trigger unique dialogue. Henry will only note that the bandit was dying and in no fit state to talk, but he will not realize the underlying cause.
- Killing Straw will prevent him from interrupting the interrogation with the bandit. The quest will skip to the stage where Henry must escort the bandit to Rattay.
- Killing Matthias will not fail the optional objective to find out what happened to him, though it will prevent the player from progressing it.
- Killing Melichar will prevent the player from starting the Pestilence quest.
- Radzig must travel to the lookout point before the player can give him their final report. Completing the investigation very quickly will mean the player must wait for him to arrive, which can take around half an in-game day from starting the quest.
- If the player has the Band of Bastards DLC and not started its quest, they may see Radzig's current location on the map at all times as the quest giver icon.
- If Radzig takes unusually long, there are three known locations where he might get stuck instead: next to the stable in Merhojed, in the main hall of the Upper Castle in Rattay, or at the Neuhof stable. However, he will not be able to talk about Merhojed because this conversation is coupled to the lookout point location. When he is sitting on his unmoving horse then it might help to kill the horse so Radzig continues his journey to the lookout point on foot (Source). Once he begins walking, be sure not to talk to him as this seems to interrupt his path-finding and means he never reaches the lookout.
